A brief history of Bacardi.
Beginning in an old tin-roofed building filled with fruit bats and growing into a multi-billion dollar company, learn how this giant of rum making has grown from an experiment to a corporate wonder.
In 1829 Don Facundo Bacardi Masso emigrated from Spain to Santiago, Cuba. The man was inventive, metodical and, most importantly for us, loved to drink. He soon discovered that Cuban rum of that time was not too well-made, unfiltered and almost foul-tasting.
And so he began to analyze the processes that were used to create the sickening concoction. What he found was that if the liquor was filtered through charcoal the impurities and contaminants that gave the drink its foul flavor would be eliminated. This resulted in a light, smooth, flavorful and drinkable rum.
Now that he knew what to do and how to do it, Bacardi purchased a tin roofed factory building in 1862. This would become his distillery. A family of fruit bats, a good luck omen in Cuban mythology, was living in the roof of the building. This is how the bat became Bacardi’s logo.
